Farmer rick news

We just had our first night with freezing temperatures. I ran over yesterday to pick the last berries of the season knowing it would be COLD last night. With an almost full moon and clear skies, it was a lovely night to be outside–in a car with seat heaters. Today is the end of ginger season BIG harvest for Tiffany, Farmer Rick and I. It has been a sad story for ginger this year with a fungus causing root rot to some parts of the crop. So it goes with farming. Each season brings successes and learning opportunities. Our sweet potatoes now have hardened off and are ready for you to try this week. We have 2 varieties to share with you-the standard orange and the purple, which has a slightly different taste, but you would still think of it as a sweet potato. We do not wash our potatoes to lengthen their storage time. Just give them a good scrub before cooking and you are all set for a fall treat. You can store them in a cool part of the house as well.
I have not been to the farm yet today so I am not certain if the basils survived in the hoop house with the sides up or not. Same for cherry tomatoes and jalapeƱos, so if you are interested in some, send me an email and I will check and get back to you. However, our cilantro is loving this fall weather and I have added it to the list this week.
I am sending a photo of a pretty dahlia, our orange sweet potatoes, a mystery nut, and the very large purple sweet potatoes. Send me you guesses on the nut. It came from Farmer Ricks back yard.
